What Therapy Costs in Nigeria in 2026

The real numbers, checked this month — plus the three ways most people end up paying less than the sticker price.

Therapy in Nigeria costs between ₦4,000 and ₦80,000 for a single session. On Mytherapist.ng in August 2026, across 119 listed therapists, the median session price is ₦20,000 and the most common price is ₦15,000. Twenty therapists charge ₦10,000 or less. Student rates, HMO cover and employer-sponsored sessions can bring that down further.

The actual spread

Most published guidance on therapy pricing in Nigeria is either vague (“it depends”) or years out of date. So here is the current distribution from our own therapist directory, checked on 10 August 2026:

Session price Therapists
₦10,000 or less 20
₦10,001 – ₦25,000 73
Above ₦25,000 26

The full range runs from ₦4,000 to ₦80,000. Half of all therapists charge ₦20,000 or less.

That spread is wider than most people expect, and it matters, because the number in your head is probably somebody’s top-of-range fee. If you assumed therapy starts at ₦25,000, you have been pricing yourself out of about eighty therapists.

Why one therapist charges ₦8,000 and another ₦50,000

Price tracks a few things, and none of them is a straightforward quality score.

Years in practice. A clinician fifteen years in with a specialist caseload charges more than someone three years qualified. That does not mean the newer therapist is worse for you — for many common presentations, the research on therapy outcomes points more to the working relationship than to the therapist’s seniority.

Specialism. Trauma, couples work, and clinical assessment tend to sit at the higher end. General anxiety and low mood support sits lower.

Profession. A consultant psychiatrist charges more than a counsellor, because the training is longer and the scope is different. If you are unsure which you need, our guide to therapy or medication is the place to start.

Session length. Most sessions are 45–60 minutes. Some therapists price a 30-minute follow-up lower.

What price does not reliably tell you is fit. The most expensive therapist on the platform is not the best one for you by default. Read how to choose the right therapist before you sort by price in either direction.

What you will actually spend in a month

A single session price is not the number that decides whether you can do this. The monthly figure is.

Most therapy starts weekly, then spaces out. At the median ₦20,000:

  • Weekly: about ₦80,000 a month
  • Fortnightly: about ₦40,000 a month
  • Monthly check-ins: ₦20,000

At ₦10,000 a session — and there are twenty therapists at or below that — fortnightly comes to ₦20,000 a month.

Weekly is the standard opening pace because early momentum matters, but it is not a rule. Say your budget out loud in the first session. A good therapist will plan around it rather than quietly let you fall away when the money runs out. That conversation is normal, and you are not the first person to have it.

How long you will need it for is a fair question with an honest answer — see how long therapy takes to work.

Three ways to pay less

1. Student rates

Eighty-eight of our therapists publish a student price. Those run from ₦1,000 to ₦35,000, with a median of ₦10,000 — so a student typically pays about half.

Verification is by school email and takes a few minutes. Full details are on the students page.

2. Your HMO

A growing number of Nigerian HMOs now include outpatient mental health, and you can book with the HMO as your payment method rather than paying and claiming back. We covered exactly how that works, screen by screen, in our guide to HMO-covered therapy, and there is background in does your HMO cover therapy?.

Worth checking even if you assume the answer is no. Plenty of people are covered and never find out.

3. Your employer

If your organisation has an employee mental health benefit, your sessions may be paid for entirely. The most common reason people do not use these is not cost — it is the fear that HR will find out what they said. They do not: the billing record and the clinical record are separate systems. We set out precisely who sees what in will my employer know I used therapy?

If none of that applies

There are free and low-cost routes, including federal neuropsychiatric hospitals, university counselling units and NGO-run services. We list them in how to get affordable therapy in Nigeria.

If you are in crisis right now, cost should not be the thing standing in your way. Go to our helplines page — those numbers are free.

Is it worth the money?

That is a real question, not a rhetorical one, and the honest answer is that it depends on whether you get a therapist you can work with. Therapy that fits changes how you function; therapy that does not is an expensive hour.

Which is an argument for spending the effort up front on the match, not for spending more money. Read what to expect during your first session, and if the fit is wrong after two or three sessions, change therapists. That is a normal thing to do, and it costs less than staying.

For a fuller treatment of the value question, we wrote about the cost of therapy in Nigeria previously — this piece updates the numbers.

Frequently asked questions

How much is one therapy session in Nigeria?

Between ₦4,000 and ₦80,000, depending on the therapist. The median on Mytherapist.ng is ₦20,000 and the most common price is ₦15,000, checked August 2026.

Is online therapy cheaper than in person?

Usually, yes — there is no room to rent and no transport for either of you. It also removes the cost most people forget: three hours in Lagos traffic for a one-hour appointment.

Do therapists in Nigeria offer payment plans?

Some do, and many will adjust session frequency to fit a budget. Ask directly in the first session.

Can I use my HMO for therapy?

Often, yes. See HMO-covered therapy for how to check your plan and book with the HMO as your payment method.

What is the cheapest way to start therapy in Nigeria?

Student rates if you qualify, then employer or HMO cover, then a lower-priced therapist at fortnightly rather than weekly sessions. Free crisis support is on our helplines page.
